Demolishing the flats in Kochi is such a waste.

They've violated the law. How about punishing them by gov. taking over the flat. Those many houses could have been used for housing many from slums, colonies.

What a waste of resources !!

I agree the white collar criminals should be put to justice, the bureaucrats, the bankers, the builders...

The main idea was to set an example so that this does not happen elsewhere again. One should also consider that the ecological impact does not end after construction, and just the presence of residents and the amenities that they need would take a toll on the area, wouldn't it?

@ashwinvis A take-over would be a big punishment too. Just by demolishing, everyone has forgotten the corrupt employees.

Gov. is already building apartments for poor people. Constructions with such violations can be taken over and used for that purpose. Isn't that better than demolishing which will cause more environment problems.

The end goal is environmental protection, then the punishment should also be considering it.

There's more advantages to a gov. take over than destroying it too.

@subins2000 You are ignoring the fact that mangroves are sensitive ecosystems.
The idea of a government takeover would place the government "above the law" and set a precedent for it in future issues.

@shameelabdulla @subins2000 "With the Kerala apartments, the Supreme Court is clearly trying to set an example of strict implementation of environmental laws. The hope is that henceforth violations of environmental laws would be detected and stopped before the start of the project itself."

@bady Wow. The housing project builders are in the hope of future urbanization in Kerala I guess.

But, I don't agree with forcefully taking ownership for housing. The gov. should instead build and if possible, should take advantage of existing buildings in violation of laws and take-it-over.

@bady That's a well detailed article. Thanks

My point is, a gov. takeover instead of demolishment will also be a punishment. That is also an example of strict implementation of environment laws.
