I wonder, did some people just picked up some sticks, heard that it makes good sound, so gathered around, started moving, put in a good music and made this artform ?

This blog and its author has very extensive information about Jewish history of Kerala. Got the information about Kunnamkulam in Kodungallur from there.

I've read and heard of a Jewish hill (Joodakunnu) in Kunnamkulam. And also of a synagogue. I've asked around and nobody knows where it is.

I was about to go full Tintin/Dora The Explorer today. I was very excited to go on a quest to find out where it is !!

Then, @Saranya comes saying that there is another place named "Kunnamkulam" in Kodungallur and the Joodakunnu is prolly there.

DAMN IT Saranyaaaaaa !

Tintin out... for now.

I grew up in Wayanad, appa from Alappuzha, amma from Ernakulam & now settled in Thrissur.

My accent is a culmination of all of these and I switch it accordingly.

This small church is one of the oldest churches in India. It got destroyed very badly in the sudden 2017 storm of Kunnamkulam. Reconstruction made it more modern, ewww.

That storm also killed off a plaavu and mathil in my home.

Rare usage of "ക്കു്, രു്" : This is how old Malayalam was written. I've been to this church many times, but I've never noticed these.

SMCയിൽ വന്നേപിന്നാ "രു്" ഒക്കെ ഞാൻ അറിഞ്ഞത്.

Went to the oldest church in Kunnamkulam today, which also has the largest cemetery in Kerala.

Captured a lot of pics, explored and uploaded them to Wikipedia.

A storm in 2017 caused huge damages to the church. It has changed a lot. I should have done this before that.

Found fellow college mates practising Thiruvathirakkali (തിരുവാതിരകളി) with the song lyrics written in Manglish.

These peeps are one of the reasons why I developed Manglish app.

It was when I joined college I realized, there are a lot of malayalees who can't read Malayalam.

Something I wrote when I was 14 and religious.

I just realized now that even the words I use to call my father and mother has Syriac origin :

Aba => Appa => Father
Emma => Amma => Mother
Malakha => Angel
Mamoditha => Mamodisa => Baptism

Similar to Arabimalayalam, there is also "Suriyani Malayalam" which uses Syriac script to write Malayalam. It originated among Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala, but is not widely used nowadays. Like Arabimalayalam, new letters to accomodate Malayalam phonemes were created.

In the internet age, Latin script is used to write Malayalam (aka Manglish). English can't render all the phonemes of Malayalam, so letters are pronounced differently according to context. "enna" can be both എന്നാ and എണ്ണ.

There are christian prayer books written in Manglish !

Since 5AD, Arabic script was used to write Malayalam. This was called "Arabimalayalam" and is still used in Kerala. The 28 Arabic letters couldn't render 53 phonemes of Malayalam, so new letters were created for it !

"Muhyadheen Mala" is the first book written in Arabimalayalam
